JEA/Loyola Media Day Keynote Speaker
The keynote speaker for the Spring 2023 Loyola/JEA Media Day will be NBC10 Philadelphia and former WWL-TV News Anchor Lucy Bustamante.
Lucy Bustamante is a morning news anchor for NBC10 and breaking news anchor for Telemundo62.
Fluent in Spanish, Lucy is the daughter of Cuban refugees who migrated to the U.S. in 1969. She was born and raised in New Orleans in a home that only spoke Spanish. The skills she learned as a child, of translating between Spanish and English as a first generation American, formed her foundation for her vibrant role as a bilingual anchor at NBC10 and Telemundo62.
“I am truly working my dream job. I’m not just translating words, but worlds,” Lucy said. “I’d like to think our work helps communities get beyond language barriers…and facilitates conversations that need to happen in the U.S. and in Philadelphia.”
As a teenager at Cabrini High School New Orleans, Lucy spent time volunteering at the now closed Cabrini Convent for retired nuns in Radnor Township, Delaware County which served as a nursing home for the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart.
“I fell in love with Philly back then and always wanted to return,” she said. “Little did I know then God would put this incredible city back in our path where I get to raise my family.”
Prior to joining NBC10, Lucy served as the weekday morning and Noon anchor at WVEC-TV in Norfolk, Virginia. At the same time, she also served as a daily weekday morning news anchor for La Selecta 103.3 at WVXX-FM, a Spanish language radio station. Prior to that, she served as an evening anchor for WWL-TV in New Orleans where she and her coworkers worked three months straight covering the devastation post Hurricane Katrina.
Lucy is a two-time Emmy award winner. She was honored for her work anchoring the explosion of the Philadelphia Energy Solutions plant in South Philly in June 2019. She received several Associated Press awards for best anchor, three regional Edward R. Murrow awards in 2011 for writing a documentary explaining the Affordable Care Act in Virginia. She also received one for breaking news in 2004 in New Orleans and a Peabody Award for coverage of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Before that, she traveled to Cuba to cover the first gubernatorial trade trip between Louisiana and Havana under President Bush. She also has co-hosted LIVE with Regis and Kelly with the late Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa.
Lucy earned a bachelor’s degree in Communications from Loyola University. She is passionate about serving the Hispanic/Latinx community and serving military families. She is the former and founding President of the Philadelphia Chapter of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists and has been involved with the Naval Officers Spouses Association as well as the NBC Universal Veterans network. Lucy lives in Havertown with her Navy Veteran husband and four children.
